THE Honest and Accountable Living for Ilonggos and a Graft-free Iloilo (Haligi) Foundation, Inc. received a cash donation of $2,000 Canadian dollar (P100,000) from a Canadian Firm from Calgary represented by Cory Fehr and Melissa Fehr for the scholarship and educational programs of Haligi Foundation.

At present the foundation has 500 high school scholars in seven national high schools in Iloilo City.
These scholars were chosen through a screening process from among the students of each school to receive financial assistance for their miscellaneous and other school fees. The foundation has also been extending scholarship assistance to students who wish to become teachers and must come from underprivileged indigent families of Iloilo City. » Read more after the jump →

The 10th anniversary celebration of the Henri and Lanette Rousseau Memorial Scholarship was held on June 4, with many local students and their family members attending. Master of ceremonies Gene Senestraro welcomed the students and provided some background for the Rousseau Scholarship. He encouraged the students to continue their education and said the Farm Bureau is proud to help them with this award.

“We want you to get your education and come back to Humboldt County and get involved in this community,” Senestraro said. “We definitely want you back to be involved in Farm Bureau because you are young and enthusiastic and that is what we want in our organization.” » Read more after the jump →

Christine Tinker has a long list of accomplishments on and off the field for Amity High School in Woodbridge. The two-year captain played on two state champion softball teams and is in the top 4 percent of her class.

Add another accomplishment. Tinker is the 2006 winner of the $1,000 Bo Kolinsky Team Player Scholarship given by The Courant. Kolinsky was the longtime assistant sports editor of The Courant who specialized in high school coverage. He died on Dec. 14, 2003.

Tinker beat out a deep and talented field of 48 applicants.

She will attend Tufts University in Medford, Mass., and major in engineering. After college she has plans, too. » Read more after the jump →

Erik Domingues graduated summa cum laude with the highest honors from UMass Dartmouth this spring, yet he has still found time for independent research, to tutor, for membership in several clubs and organizations, and for a part-time job.
The New Bedford High School graduate has the Jacobs Family New Bedford High School Scholarship to thank for giving him the time to accomplish all this and participate fully in college life.
In 2002, he was one of two graduating seniors who were awarded the $20,000, four-year scholarships established at the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts by City native and Qualcomm founder Dr. Irwin Jacobs and his wife, Joan Klein Jacobs.
Mr. Domingues was a guest speaker May 4 when the Jacobses came to New Bedford from their home in La Jolla, Calif., to award this year’s scholarships to three graduating seniors. The presentation was held at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. » Read more after the jump →

Derrick Pettway of Decatur received a Juneteenth Fest Scholarship at the Focus on Education program held as part of the festival.

Pettway is a 2006 graduate of Austin High School and plans to attend Troy State University. He is the son of Clemon and Ida Pettway.

Northwest-Shoals

These area students have received scholarships from Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Grant Copeland of Moulton, Ambassador Leadership scholarship. He is a 2006 graduate of Lawrence County High School, where he was tapped for the Educational Talent Search and was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” He is the son of Laquita and Stanley Coan and Scott Copeland. » Read more after the jump →

Former TV production exec Diane Piette said she didn’t ask St. Thomas to give her a full scholarship to law school.

But it was offered, because of her terrific LSAT score, and she took it. That has raised eyebrows among some members of her socio-economic set.

What happened to giving scholarships to people who need the money?

As the wife of Ed Piette, outgoing GM at WCCO-TV and former GM at KSTP-TV, the family has means. In 1998, they bought a home in North Oaks for $937,000. The guess is that Ed had to be pulling in $300,000 to $400,000. Now the Piettes are headed to the East Coast, where he’ll be GM of two stations in Boston and one in Providence. Conservatively speaking, that ought to earn him at least $600,000 a year. » Read more after the jump →
