British Council is pleased to announce Auckland’s Gema Carlson as the Scottish International Scholarship winner for 2006, the second New Zealander to win this prestigious award.

Gema, an AUT graduate is currently working for its Student Services department as Team Leader of the First-Year Experience and Orientation programmes, looking at the retention and success of students. She will travel to Scotland in September to complete a Masters in Education at Edinburgh University.

The Scottish International Scholarship is funded by Scottish Executive under its Fresh Talent scheme and aims to create lasting connections between Scotland and industry leaders and entrepreneurs across the world.

Gema will join 21 scholars from six countries on this full scholarship.

She says she was drawn to Scotland for its excellent education system which focuses on learning rather than teaching.

“Studying in Scotland will expose me to contemporary international research, concepts and strategies about education. I will also be able to return to New Zealand with specialised knowledge of the Scottish and UK education systems which will help me make a positive difference to our work in New Zealand.”

The Scottish International Scholarship scheme is managed by British Council. The first local winner of the award was Karen Williams who is currently completing a Masters of Science in IT at Glasgow University.
