When I was in grade school, I bowled in a junior league at Sunset Bowl in Waukegan. I won a tournament, and the league put $125 in an account with the Junior Bowling Association. This money was stipulated for college use only.
Last year, I was thinking about the cost of books for my second year of college and I remembered the scholarship. I took the letter to Sunset Bowl and was told they had new owners and knew nothing of this scholarship. The person at the desk took the letter and said he would look into it.
I stopped back several times and had no luck. I asked for the letter back, but they said they did not have it.

Dear Ashly: The Fixer is happy to help you further your studies in photojournalism at Albion College. (We’re also relieved that you didn’t want the money for Bud Lights and nachos.) We spoke with the new owners of Sunset Bowl, who have made good on the original scholarship offer. Your grandmother picked up the check and has forwarded it to you.
Dear Fixer:
In March, Rick Rohr of R & R Tree Service of Kenosha, Wis., was in my neighborhood trimming several of my neighbor’s trees. I requested an estimate on trimming two of my trees and having one tree cut down. I agreed to the price and paid him cash as he requested.
After cutting the tree down (leaving about a 5-foot stump) he gave my father an estimate of $60 to grind down the stump. He said he would need the money up-front for this part of the job because he would have to rent equipment to finish the job. Because I was at work, my father gave him a check (made out to his girlfriend, as he requested). He told my father he would be back to remove the branches and grind the stump the following weekend.
When he did not show up as scheduled, my father and I tried several times to reach him at the business number and a cell phone number he gave us, but we could not leave any messages because the voice mailboxes were full or not set up.
After several tries, I was finally able to leave a message on his business line asking him to please call me to let me know when he was going to come finish the job. I never received a return call.
This went on and on. Finally, he showed up to remove the branches and told my father he would be back Saturday to grind the stump and finish the job. Again, he did not show up. My calls and messages after that have gotten no response.
