The University at Albany has formally renamed its Inaugural Scholarship Fund the Kermit L. Hall and Phyllis A. Hall Inaugural Scholarship Fund.
The fund had been established on Hall’s third day in office in February 2005 and, as envisioned by Hall, is being used to pay tuition and other college costs of promising, needy students. Hall took $100,000 that the college would have spent on his inaugural ceremony to get the fund going, and he and his wife personally donated $10,000 toward it. The fund has since attracted more than 1,600 contributions and now stands at nearly $3 million.
“It was a privilege to work beside him as we set out to improve opportunities for undergraduates by actively engaging students and by creating an honors college,” UAlbany Provost Susan Herbst said. “We are also especially grateful to Phyllis Hall, who along with Kermit made the first pledge to the Inaugural Scholarship Fund.”
UAlbany held a commemorative event for Hall on Monday that drew nearly 2,000 people to the Recreation and Convocation Center on campus. Speakers who worked with Hall at the various stops he made in his college career remembered him as a scholar, defender of constitutional rights and a tireless advocate for whatever institution he was representing.
Hall died Aug. 13 of apparent heart trouble while swimming off Hilton Head, S.C.
