AN organisation set up to promote healthy eating and make fresh fruit and vegetables more affordable has been launched in West Lothian.

The new group, the West Lothian Food and Health Development (WELFHD), has been created to take the place of the old West Lothian Food Network.

It aims to work with local farmers to help reinvest money into local producers, as well as providing quality food for people in the area.

Other aims include alleviating “food poverty” in the region, offering education on the benefits of eating a healthy diet and cutting the distance that food has to travel before being sold.

It also plans to bulk buy produce from farmers in order to help food co-ops get more affordable fruit and vegetables.

As part of the project, West Lothian Council has helped to create a central store and distribution system to enable WELFHD to develop a diverse range of suppliers - ultimately leading to better quality food at affordable prices.

Enterprise and development leader Willie Dunn said that the project was a “win-win” enterprise that would help benefit people living in the area.*news.scotsman.com
