Several local student won 2007-2008 Regent Scholars program scholarships at Washington State University:
Marian D. Padilla, a senior at Squalicum High School, won a four-year scholarship worth more than $54,000. Padilla plan to study mathematics. She is the daughter of Marijun and Raul Padilla.
Natalie Wilson, a senior at Squalicum High School won a scholarship worth $8,000 over two years. She plans to study creative writing. Wilson is the daughter of Kathy and Bruce Wilson.
Whitney B. Kendall, a sen ior at Bellingham High School, won a scholarship worth $8,000 over two years. She plans to study biology. Her parents are Susan an Kelly Kendall.
Gregory Phancenek, a senior at Ferndale High School, won a $6,000 scholarship. He plans to study neuroscience. Phancenek is the son of Yuriko and Pau Phancenek.
Lauren Baumgart, a senior at Sehome High School won a $6,000 scholarship. She plans to study communication. Baumgart is the daughter of Tanya and Jim Baumgart.
Judges pick winners for their academic performance, leadership capability and community and extracurricular activities.
Sarah Collins of Bellingham has received two grants from the Student Academic Affairs Board at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. Collins, a senior biochemistry major, received $1,838 to research snail habitat in central Africa. She also receive $546 to present her research at a conference for the Western Society of Naturalists.
Carol S. Nicolay has been named director of professional studies for Extended Education and Summer Programs at Western Washington University. Nicolay most recently was assistant director of academic programs for the University of Washington Educational Outreach program. She has a doctorate in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University and more than 20 years of adult education and training experience.
