Dr. Robert W. Egdell has kept a small, well-worn notebook in which he writes the name of each baby he has delivered since the first one at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna in 1975.

That running tally reached a landmark recently for Egdell of Northeast Ohio Obstetrics and Gynecology in Ravenna, when he delivered his 6,000th baby at Robinson Memorial Hospital Birth Center.

Egdell figures he has delivered more than 7,000 babies factoring in his two years as lieutenant commander and senior medical officer in the U.S. Navy and while interning.

“I am very proud to have been part of so many wonderful births,” Egdell said. “Each individual birth is more significant than the total number.”

Egdell recalled a miracle birth on a Mother’s Day, roughly 20 years ago, when a woman with no ovaries was able to go to term and delivered a healthy baby with a Caesarian section.

He has delivered a number of multiple births, but has never delivered more than two babies at one time.

The most babies he has delivered in 24 hours is nine, while the most he has delivered in a month is 47.

Egdell practices with four other doctors and a full staff as part of Northeast Ohio OB/GYN, which averages between 600 to 700 deliveries each year.

“I have an excellent staff,” Egdell said. “Patients come to me because of the care they get from the staff that surrounds me.”

Utilizing the latest technology has always been Edgell’s key to assisting his patients, according to Deanna Dedon, the registered diagnostic medical sonographer of Northeast Ohio OB/GYN.

His practice is currently working with the latest Human Papiloma Virus vaccine, proven to reduce the risk of ovarian and cervical cancer.

“He is a good boss, always concerned about (the staff) and his patients,” said Dedon, who has been a part of Edgell’s staff since 1983.

“He is a soft spoken man with a good heart,” she added.

Egdell, who lives in Kent, started a family with his wife, Jan, while stationed in Iceland on the Keflavik Naval Dispensary in 1974. He has two children, Christine and Jeffrey, and one grandson, Anthony.

He obtained his medical degree in 1969 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa., now known as Thomas Jefferson University.

He completed his internship and residency at the Wilmington Medical Center in Wilmington, Del.

When asked about retirement, Egdell, 63, said he plans to continue his practice for another four to five years.

Upon retirement, he plans to take more trips to Florida and spend more time playing golf with his family, Egdell added.
