University of Texas at Arlington student Diana Kang has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Kimball Office Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship is sponsored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Foundation and was made possible with funding from Kimball Office. A Georgian College Student has won a province-wide scholarship.

Alison Jordan of Chatsworth has won the 2-thousand dollar Larry Cripps OPSEU (Ontario Public Service Employees Union) scholarship.

The award is given out annually to a student who is dependent of a member of OPSEU.

The Gulf Coast Community College Foundation had hoped to raise about $5 million by 2007 for scholarship and building projects at the college.

Instead, the “Dream Believe Give” campaign has raised close to $9 million and may well double its initial goal by the time the campaign ends in February. Local donors have given about $4.3 million so far, and that will be matched by state money, said Margie Mazur, the executive director of the foundation. Mazur added that about 70 percent of the money goes to scholarships, with the rest to construction and renovation projects. » Read more after the jump →

Michigan college students will be eligible for a new Michigan Promise scholarship of $4,000 under legislation signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm Thursday, December 21. Beginning with this year’s high school seniors, students will now be eligible for the scholarships that replace the current Merit Award of $2,500. more information

After completing their PSATs at Milford High School, seniors Michael Jauch and Ashley Yeager were named as part of the nation’s top 1 percent of students.

Yeager and Jauch were honored as National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists for the 2006-2007 school year.

“My family was thrilled for me and a little surprised. No one expected me to be a semifinalist, since this is a nationwide scholarship,” Yeager said. » Read more after the jump →

Four months after second-grade teacher Alicia Shanks, 56, was fatally shot in her classroom, the healing process at Essex Elementary School is under way, principal Jan Keffer said.

“But people are really united in doing what we need to do for our children and our families as we work through the grief and sorrow of what happened at our school,” he said. » Read more after the jump →

Four months after a teacher was shot and killed in a classroom, the Essex Elementary School in Vermont is still healing from the shooting spree.

The school is setting up a memorial scholarship to honor 56-year-old Alicia Shanks.

The principal says the scholarship will help Essex students who want to teach and others who continue to grapple with the second-grade teacher’s death. » Read more after the jump →
