Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, in conjunction with the International Sonoran Desert Alliance, host a ribbon-cutting celebration marking the completion of the Curley School Artisan Lofts. The conversion of the historic Curley School to artisan lofts is a key component the $8.9 million restoration project that is creating 30 new affordable live and work rental housing units for artisans. Situated on seven acres in the heart of Ajo, the project also includes affordable and market-rate sales units, offices, a youth and senior center, and the preservation of a community auditorium. Residents will be offered job training, employment counseling, case management, pre-purchase homeownership counseling, health and youth programs, and supportive services. The project is funded in part by a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which has awarded $45.3 million in grants to Arizona projects since its inception in 1990. As part of a new economic development strategy in the town of Ajo, the Curley School Artisan Lofts also serves as a model of affordable housing that public-private partnerships can produce using the AHP.
