Tyler Howard, 7, and his brother Brandon, 5, had a small problem. They simply had too many Batman action figures.

“We didn’t really play with them that much,” Tyler said. “We didn’t know what to do with them.”

Fortunately, the Noblesville Parks & Recreation Department had the answer. It hosted its second Kids Helping Kids Garage Sale Saturday at the Forest Park Inn. Nearly 40 aspiring entrepreneurs put their outgrown and forgotten toys up for sale.

“The admission fee of a dollar and the $10 for table rental all goes to scholarships for our Noblesville Parks programs,” said Susie Davis, recreation coordinator for Noblesville Parks.

The kids do get to keep the money they make from the sales of their goods. Six-year-old Abby Katuin planned to use her earnings to buy some stuffed animals from her fellow vendors. » Read more after the jump →

IT Employer Launches Scholarships For Maori

New Zealand – EDS NZ today announced its latest move to address declining Maori graduate numbers and a tight labour market with the launch of five IT scholarships for the Maori community.

“We are taking the lead to encourage more young Maori to enter the knowledge economy. As the country’s largest IT employer we are mindful that Maori are under represented right across this sector, and that needs to change,” says EDS NZ Managing Director, Steve Murray.

In addition to increasing the presence of Maori in the IT workforce, the scholarship will allow EDS to tap in to a new resource pool in the face of a tight labour market.

“This is more than corporate responsibility, it’s about bringing more kiwis in to the knowledge sector to combat skill shortages, and giving talented people a real opportunity,” Mr Murray says.

By his own admission, Yash Gupta is like “a kid in a candy shop”. His candy is the intellectual property residing in the different schools of Maryland-based Johns Hopkins University – intellectual property that he intends to bring to bear on the university’s newly-created Carey Business School, of which he is the dean.

With the university’s strengths in medicine, public health, arts and sciences, and international studies, Prof Gupta wants to create a programme that offers an interdisciplinary approach to business education.

The Indian-born, British-educated dean – who was previously dean of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California – has grand ambitions for the school, aiming to turn it rapidly into one of the world’s top-ranking institutions.

Business education is nothing new at Johns Hopkins. Business and engineering courses were first introduced in 1916 and a graduate-level business degree that was launched in 1961 evolved into a master of administrative science programme highly focused on management and economics. » Read more after the jump →
