The Northern Marianas College in the CNMI now have one more option when applying for scholarship funds after the college was added to the roster of beneficiaries of the First Hawaiian Bank Guam Business Businesswoman of the Year gala.
Proceeds from the 2008 First Hawaiian Bank Guam Business Businesswomen of the Year gala will now fund scholarship programs at the University of Guam, Guam Community College and the Northern Marianas College. The expansion was part of efforts to provide more students with scholarship opportunities.
For the past two years, proceeds from the gala have funded scholarship programs at the University of Guam. Six recipients have received scholarship awards to date.
“I am delighted we are able to broaden the program to two additional institutions of higher learning in the Mariana Islands. Such a move underlines the continuing commitment our two organizations have made to support the education of our future business leaders,” says First Hawaiian Bank Senior Vice President and CNMI Region Manager Laura Lynn V. Dacanay.
Maureen N. Maratita, publisher of Guam Business, says, “I recently toured Guam Community College and the Northern Marianas College, and I am impressed with new programs and endeavors at both facilities. We look forward to awarding scholarships to students at the three locations as a result of this year’s gala and fundraising.”
“I think it’s an opportunity for our students,” said Mary A. Y. Okada, president of GCC. “We are celebrating 30 years of career technical education on Guam it’s indeed an excellent opportunity for our students to be given scholarships to help further their education.”
“The timing of the scholarship could not have been better,” NMC president Carmen Fernandez said. “We have many deserving students that are in need of financial assistance especially in light of the CNMI’s economic downturn. Many students struggle to make ends meet, to support their families, and to pay for childcare. This donation will go a long way towards allowing our students to focus on their studies.”
