Automaker says sales in Europe and South America countered downturn in U.S. market. Early retirement and buyout offers fall short.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford Motor Co. surprised Wall Street on Thursday with a $100 million profit in the first quarter as strong results from Europe and South America helped offset the impact of a slumping U.S. economy that cut car and truck sales in its main market.

The company also said Thursday its latest round of early retirement and buyout offers netted 4,200 hourly workers, fewer than Ford had targeted.

Ford says it earned 5 cents per share in the January-March period. The No. 2 U.S.-based automaker lost $282 million, or 15 cents a share, in the same period last year.

Excluding special items, the company said it made $525 million after taxes, or 20 cents per share. That beat Wall Street’s expectations. Thirteen analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had predicted a loss of 16 cents per share. » Read more after the jump →

The cities of Longview and Kelso paid Destination Development $10,000 each to assess the cities with a critical, honest eye and suggest strategies for creating a distinctive, positive image. Brooks will present his findings about Kelso at a workshop in mid-April.

Improving the area’s way-finding signs should be local cities’ No. 1 priority, Brooks said. The second priority should be building a better Tourist and Volcano Information Center to replace the beat up, single-wide trailer along Interstate 5 at Exit 39, he said. » Read more after the jump →

College officials announced Monday they would be partnering with the World Engineering Xchange (WEX) for a national marketing strategy for Washington State’s chemical operator online program.

“This program was developed for the chemical industry here, but because our chemical industry is shrinking, we looked for a new market,” said Washington State President Charlotte Hatfield. “There’s an opportunity here for us to … export our knowledge and abilities and join the world economy.”

A successful marketing program could mean nearly $2 million in gross revenue in 18 months for the program. There is no initial cost for the college to work with WEX, which will be paid a portion of the sales. » Read more after the jump →
