The US is hunting for Hindi and Arabic teachers in India in a bid to turn its citizens multilingual.

In India, the recruitment process is being facilitated by an arm of the human resource development ministry, EdCIL (Education Consultants India Limited).

In 2004, EdCIL signed a memorandum of understanding with the American Department of Education to export several full-time Indian teachers for maths, science and special education.

“Now, for the first time, there is a demand for Hindi teachers too,'’ said Anu Banerjee, chief managing director, EdCIL.

“The applicant needs to have a master’s degree with a B.Ed or an M.Ed and a minimum of three years’ work experience.” » Read more after the jump →

It identified a Yale sophomore, by name, as having appeared in a pornographic movie, and linked to a Web site that showed him engaging in explicit acts with three other men. The post had about 900 views in its first few days (about 5,300 undergraduates attend Yale).

After learning about the post from a roommate, the student spent most of that evening panicked and dispirited. In the days that followed, he pored over study materials for his midterm exams and did his best to focus on his coming spring vacation. “I’m trying to zone it out,” he said in a telephone interview. “What else could I really do?”

Such dramas pervade Juicy Campus, an eight-month-old Web site (JuicyCampus.com) that cultivates and distributes gossip across a network of 59 college campuses. Promising that all posts will be anonymous, it allows students to participate in a collegiate version of celebrity gossip sites like TMZ.com and PerezHilton.com; it is a dorm bathroom wall writ large, one that anyone with Internet access can read from and post to.

Free guide explains changes to the Machinery Directive

MachineBuilding.net has published a free guide to the new Machinery Directive, which comes into force on 29 December 2009. There will be no transition period, so companies that build or partly assemble machines, and those that perform final assembly or import machinery for use in the EU, need to start preparing for the changes. EC type-examination certificates issued under the current Directive will no longer be valid after 2009.

The third amendment to the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) is intended to simplify and clarify matters, but there are other significant changes. These relate mainly to the Directive`s scope, partly-completed machinery, fixings for fixed guards, and conformity assessment. In addition, there are new measures relating to “market surveillance” (enforcement) and certification.

MachineBuilding.net has cross-checked between the new and old Directives and produced a guide to the new version that highlights the differences and discusses their implications » Read more after the jump →

Negotiations between Mount Sinai Hospital and the union representing its nurses have hit a wall. According to the union, the New York State Nurses Association, which represents 1,900 Mount Sinai nurses, talks broke down Friday after the union announced its intention to picket March 11. At that point, the union contends hospital officials canceled three negotiating sessions set for this month.

The nursing contract expired December 31, and negotiations have stalled over wages and a plan by the hospital to reclassify how it counts paid time off.

In an e-mail message, a hospital spokeswoman said the hospital was ready to negotiate, and that the union broke off negotiations. She said the hospital offered a ratification bonus of $575 to each nurse and a 3% wage increase for each year of a three-year contract.

A union spokesman, Mark Genovese, said a strike has not been ruled out, but union officials prefer to “see this play out at the negotiation table first.”

Texas Homeowners Insurance Tips for some family

Ten months after severe storms hit the D-FW area last spring, one of my colleagues is still trying to get an insurance settlement to repair damage to her house from a falling tree.

In the meantime, her neighbor’s house, damaged in the same storm, has been fixed.

My colleague is not alone. Many Texas homeowners have faced delays in getting their insurance claims resolved, or denials.

Insurance is complicated and getting information that makes sense can be difficult. And in Texas, which has the highest average homeowner insurance premiums in the country, such information can affect your bottom line.

So how can you get more information before you purchase a policy? And what can you do if you have a problem? » Read more after the jump →
