DALLAS — /PRNewswire/ — Whether Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Christmas, the holidays are a time of goodwill, cheer, and above all, giving. Therefore in the spirit of the season, the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) is spreading its goodwill and cheer by giving back to the community.

This Dallas-based trade group is calling for high school seniors to enter to win $20,000 in scholarships in its National Scholarship Contest, http://www.afsascholarship.org/. So with time off for the holidays, what better time for students to apply for scholarships, like AFSA’s National Scholarship Contest, in hopes of winning one of life’s most treasured gifts: an education?

More exciting than a Reindeer sweater, AFSA’s National Scholarship Contest is the gift that keeps giving, guaranteed to give $20,000 this year, and that money can go a long way to put dreams of a further education within reach. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma’s women’s basketball team has a new scholarship player.

Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale surprised walk-on sophomore guard Lauren Willis of Overland Park, Kan., with the scholarship papers during the Sooners’ annual holiday party.

Coale says Willis had earned the scholarship because of her commitment, dedication to the program and selfless attitude.

The 5-foot-11 Willis turned down scholarship offers from a handful of schools, including some in the Big 12, to walk on at Oklahoma. She has averaged 1.2 points per game in six appearances this season.

Her scholarship will take effect during the spring 2009 semester. Willis will be the Sooners’ 13th player on scholarship. » Read more after the jump →

A year and a day after Smithsburg Police Officer Christopher Shane Nicholson gave his life in the line of duty, Maryland Chapter II of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club gathered to present his family with a gift that will help keep his memory alive for years to come.

The Blue Knights raised $7,000 from an Oct. 11 ride for a scholarship fund in honor of Nicholson, who was shot to death Dec. 19, 2007, while trying to stop a man who was being sought for an earlier killing.

Students who are interested in a career in law enforcement can apply for the scholarships, said Nicholson’s mother, Karen Highbarger. Those at Williamsport High School, her son’s alma mater, will get the first chance at the scholarships, she said.

The money from the October ride brought the scholarship fund to about $18,000, Highbarger said. The family wants it to become a perpetual scholarship fund in the future, earning enough interest for $500 or $1,000 scholarships for worthy students, she said.

It identified a Yale sophomore, by name, as having appeared in a pornographic movie, and linked to a Web site that showed him engaging in explicit acts with three other men. The post had about 900 views in its first few days (about 5,300 undergraduates attend Yale).

After learning about the post from a roommate, the student spent most of that evening panicked and dispirited. In the days that followed, he pored over study materials for his midterm exams and did his best to focus on his coming spring vacation. “I’m trying to zone it out,” he said in a telephone interview. “What else could I really do?”

Such dramas pervade Juicy Campus, an eight-month-old Web site (JuicyCampus.com) that cultivates and distributes gossip across a network of 59 college campuses. Promising that all posts will be anonymous, it allows students to participate in a collegiate version of celebrity gossip sites like TMZ.com and PerezHilton.com; it is a dorm bathroom wall writ large, one that anyone with Internet access can read from and post to.
