Nearly half the respondents in a survey of U.S. primary care physicians said that they would seriously consider getting out of the medical business within the next three years if they had an alternative.

The survey, released this week by the Physicians’ Foundation, which promotes better doctor-patient relationships, sought to find the reasons for an identified exodus among family doctors and internists, widely known as the backbone of the health industry.

A U.S. shortage of 35,000 to 40,000 primary care physicians by 2025 was predicted at last week’s American Medical Association annual meeting.

In the survey, the foundation sent questionnaires to more than 150,000 doctors nationwide.

Of the 12,000 respondents, 49 percent said they’d consider leaving medicine. Many said they are overwhelmed with their practices, not because they have too many patients, but because there’s too much red tape generated from insurance companies and government agencies. » Read the rest of the entry..

CU has re-initiated an online alcohol prevention course for students, asking to think about their drinking habits and learn about the effects of alcohol on the body.

AlcoholEdu for College is a highly encouraged science-based course available for all students, especially those new to campus to be on the same page of understanding as peers, said Jane Curtis, M.A., director for Alcohol and Other Drugs Program.

The feedback for the course, which stresses responsible drinking, has thus far been overwhelmingly positive, Curtis said.

“In part it’s how we set it up,” Curtis said. “We want to encourage students to talk to us. Voluntary participation is a large part of the success.”

Culpeper County Public School parents to pay for various school-related fees for programs and/or supplies so that their children can participate in an assortment of activities and/or outings.

But those costs have sparked outrage from an education outreach organization that believes a free education should be offered at — just that — no cost.

Just Children, a grassroots advocacy agency in conjunction with the Legal Aid Justice Center, submitted a report to the Virginia Department of Education last month questioning the state’s policy on fees that public schools charge for courses and materials.

“Facing inadequate resources, tapped out local governments, and the inability to raise revenue themselves, school systems have been forced to get creative, turning to an alternative source of direct revenue: their students,” the report states. » Read the rest of the entry..

Reflecting on her victory in the Pennsylvania primary, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday neatly summed up the chief political rationale of her enduring candidacy.

“I won the states that we have to win — Ohio, now Pennsylvania,” Mrs. Clinton said on CNN about her successes over Senator Barack Obama, in one of her six appearances on morning news shows. “It’s very hard to imagine a Democrat getting to the White House without winning those states.”

Mrs. Clinton says her popularity among blue-collar workers, women and Hispanics makes her the candidate to beat Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the swing states that decide presidential races. Along with Ohio and Pennsylvania, she also cites her success in Michigan and Florida — even though the Democratic Party disqualified those contests, and Mr. Obama was not on the Michigan ballot — to claim an edge in crucial battlegrounds. » Read the rest of the entry..

Automaker says sales in Europe and South America countered downturn in U.S. market. Early retirement and buyout offers fall short.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford Motor Co. surprised Wall Street on Thursday with a $100 million profit in the first quarter as strong results from Europe and South America helped offset the impact of a slumping U.S. economy that cut car and truck sales in its main market.

The company also said Thursday its latest round of early retirement and buyout offers netted 4,200 hourly workers, fewer than Ford had targeted.

Ford says it earned 5 cents per share in the January-March period. The No. 2 U.S.-based automaker lost $282 million, or 15 cents a share, in the same period last year.

Excluding special items, the company said it made $525 million after taxes, or 20 cents per share. That beat Wall Street’s expectations. Thirteen analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had predicted a loss of 16 cents per share. » Read the rest of the entry..
