VILLAGERS have felled a tree across Papua New Guinea’s historic Kokoda Trail, where Australian soldiers fought Japanese troops in 1942, and declared trekkers unwelcome.

Village spokesman Barney Jack said yesterday the track was closed.

“From today no trekkers will pass by here,” he said. “If people come here and trespass on our land, we will use force to stop them.”

Mr Jack said he represented 1000 villagers who are demanding that the PNG Government allow Australian company Frontier Resources to dig up 600 metres of the track to mine a $US6 billion ($A6.7 billion) copper and gold deposit. » Read the rest of the entry..

Salvador ‘Angelica’ Valdes, 18, graduated from Santa Cruz High School and immediately started summer courses at Cabrillo with the help of an American Dream Scholarship that helps pay for school and basic necessities.

Valdes, who was home-schooled until the ninth grade, attended four high schools in two different states because of family challenges at home. She spent the summer in welding and math classes at Cabrillo and is now a full-time student. The scholarship applications of some 380 children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Western Visayas, who have applied for education scholarship program, had been approved.

OWWA-National Capital Region (NCR) received the most number of applications with 700 approved applications followed by OWWA-RWO VI with 380 approved applications, while OWWA-RWO IX and XI received the least number of approved applications with each getting only 37 applicants

These government scholars in Region VI are among the 3,218 OFW children and other beneficiaries nationwide whose scholarship applications were approved nationwide.

Florida faces a critical need for new teachers, especially in math, science and special education. At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, Florida had 1,075 unfilled teaching positions. 16 awarded Canadian scholarships Career & Education, Andrew Holness, last Monday urged recipients of the first ever Jamaica/Okanagan College scholarships to lift the Jamaican flag high during their time at the Canadian institution.

“When you leave here, you leave as ambassadors,” Holness told the 16 scholarship recipients at the award ceremony held at the Hilton Kingston hotel. “When you graduate, your professors must say, ‘Let us get some more Jamaicans because they worked and because they deserve it’.”
