WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today appealed to Senate Appropriators to not include any language in the District of Columbia’s funding bill which will adversely impact the District’s Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). The program provides low income students in failing schools in the District up to $7,500 a year in tuition, school fees, and transportation expenses to attend non-public schools.

In the letters, Senator Lieberman noted that only 6% of students entering the OSP program have a mother with a bachelor’s degree, and that the average household income is around $22,700. These are students who would otherwise be attending troubled schools in the District.

Senator Lieberman is a strong believer in our nation’s public school system and is committed to pushing for funding and reforms to make our public school system the best in the world. While working towards this goal, he has supported pilot voucher programs as a means to provide students in currently struggling schools with alternative ways to get the best education possible. » Read the rest of the entry..

A program that gained national attention in 1991 for offering to pay college tuition for 69 second-graders is closing its doors in Cambridge on Friday.

The local “Say Yes to Education” program is coming to an end because the last of the original 69 students just graduated with a doctoral degree in pharmacy.

The program, funded in part by millionaire philanthropist and Boston native George Weiss, tracked the students from second grade through graduation — and then paid for their college tuition. Participants were chosen for their multicultural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

“I’d venture to say it’s my most successful program,” Weiss said in a phone interview Thursday.

Of the original 69 students, all but seven got their high school diplomas or GEDs, and more than half are now college graduates, said Anne Larkin, program director and a Lesley University professor. » Read the rest of the entry..

College Plus!, an online program that allows students to complete a regionally accredited bachelor’s degree in as few as two years, is providing an alternative to the dilemmas of high costs and high indoctrination levels facing parents and students.

Today, tuition costs are skyrocketing. Even with student loans and financial aid programs many young people are unable to attend college – at least in the traditional way. But, in today’s competitive business market, a bachelor’s degree is necessary.

But the cost is only the beginning of the problems facing young people heading to America’s universities. Some students and parents are as concerned about how today’s colleges and universities will attempt to change their most basic values and worldview.

Over the last few months, Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia has “rallied the troops” to support an overhaul of the current GI Bill. Earlier in May, AMVETS, one of the nation’s leading veterans’ service organizations with chapters representing all generations of veterans in all 50 states, rallied on the steps of Capitol Hill alongside Webb, a bipartisan bloc of Congressional supporters and fellow veterans’ service organizations seeking to restore veterans’ education benefits.

As Military Appreciation Month draws to a close, we must recommit ourselves as Americans to providing for those who sacrifice to keep us free. When the original GI Bill passed after World War II, we learned that an investment in our veterans’ education is an investment in the future of our nation. These brave men and women are proven leaders on the battlefield and they will prove to be leaders in our communities for years to come.

In recent months we have seen reports citing high rates of unemployment among our recently-returned veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. It is our obligation as a nation to see that our veterans and their family members have every opportunity to succeed. Sadly, we are failing.
